THE NEED FOR A PLAN

In January 2023, an EF2 tornado hit Selma and Dallas County. What had been a persistent housing challenge became an acute crisis when more than 1,300 homes were lost in a single day.

A Comprehensive Approach

The effect of an acute shock, such as a severe weather event, can be intensified by chronic stressors, including aging infrastructure and economic hardship. This plan assesses the risks faced by Selma and identifies opportunities to address them in an integrated way. Investing in resilience provides multiple benefits at once including reducing costs, boosting the local economy, and enhancing the health and well-being of the community.

Plan Structure

The Selma Now Strategic Action Plan is organized into five broad goal areas, which reflect the inter-relatedness of issues. Each is advanced through several strategies that serve to organize the specific actions detailed in the Plan.

Place-Based Strategies

The development strategy map depicts concepts and general locations where future development is encouraged. This diagram portrays a high-level view of anticipated development concepts detailed in the Plan. The boundaries of these concept areas are intended to be general.

City-Wide Strategies

To aid in long-term recovery and build comprehensive resilience in Selma, strategic actions must address challenges at multiple scales, encompassing its unique neighborhoods, varied patterns, and the broader regional context.
